In the summer of 2015, a handful of photos taken along a riverbank in Ben Tre, Vietnam, began circulating online. They showed a skeletal dog scavenging through piles of garbage, drawn by the smell of food he could no longer eat.

His mouth was sealed shut.

Black electrical tape had been wrapped so tightly around his muzzle that the flesh beneath had died. The skin had decayed. White bone was visible where a face should have been.

Lucky wasn’t just injured.
He was fading — slowly, painfully — in full view of the world.

A Horrifying Truth Behind the Tape

What had happened to Lucky was worse than anyone initially imagined.

Investigators later discovered that he had been sold to a local slaughterhouse. In an attempt to silence dogs before killing them, workers wrapped their mouths tightly with tape — a cruel method meant to prevent screaming.

But Lucky fought back.

Somehow, in that dark place, he escaped.

For more than a week, he wandered the streets of Ben Tre in agony. He could smell food, but his jaws wouldn’t open. He searched trash piles endlessly, starving and dehydrated, his muzzle slowly rotting while infection spread.

Yet despite everything, Lucky kept walking.

He refused to disappear.

The Night a Country Came Together

Photographer Dien Nguyen was the first to truly see Lucky. Realizing the dog’s condition was beyond anything he could handle alone, he shared the images online.

The response was immediate — and overwhelming.

Within hours, people across Vietnam were asking the same question: Where is he?

A group of young rescuers from Ho Chi Minh City, known as “Gia Đình Của Bé” (Baby’s Family), didn’t wait for daylight. They drove through the night and reached Ben Tre around 2:00 a.m., beginning a desperate search.

When they finally found Lucky, even seasoned rescuers broke down in tears.

The tape had sunk so deeply into his swollen face that it was almost invisible. His breath carried the unmistakable smell of severe infection. He was barely holding on.

Silence in the Operating Room

At Saigon Pet Veterinary Clinic, doctors worked carefully for hours.

Layer by layer, they removed the tape.

When the final strip came off, revealing exposed bone where his snout once was, the room fell completely silent.

Despite the pain, Lucky didn’t fight.
He didn’t scream.
He didn’t move.

It was as if he understood — for the first time — that these hands were there to save him.

A Journey That Crossed Continents

Healing was slow and uncertain. Lucky’s case required extensive care, patience, and constant monitoring. He was taken in by A.R.C. Vietnam, where he was given the name “Lucky” — not because his life was easy, but because he was still alive at all.

And then, something remarkable happened.

His story traveled far beyond Vietnam.

In late 2016, Lucky was adopted by the German animal welfare organization RespekTiere Leben. The dog who once wandered riverbanks in pain now found himself surrounded by green fields, clean air, soft beds, and people who saw him not as broken — but as brave.

He learned to eat again.
He learned to trust again.
He learned that hands could bring comfort, not harm.

Lucky’s scars never fully disappeared — but they no longer defined him.

His journey became a symbol of what compassion can do when people refuse to look away.
