Sometimes it’s saved by one tiny tail wag at exactly the right moment.

Murray’s story started in one of the cruelest places a puppy can end up: Dead Dog Beach in Puerto Rico — a notorious stretch of sand where unwanted animals are dumped like yesterday’s trash.

He was found with three siblings when he was only about 12 weeks old. And even at that age, Murray was already losing his fight.

He had contracted distemper, a vicious virus that attacks the nervous system and leaves most puppies with little to no chance of survival.

His condition was so severe that the founder of The Sato Project and a local veterinarian made the most heartbreaking decision possible: to put him down and end his suffering.

Murray was placed on the exam table. The room went quiet.

Murray survived the virus that took his sister’s life — but the battle didn’t leave him untouched.

Distemper warped the way his bones developed, leaving his skull flatter than normal and his face permanently crooked. His teeth deteriorated so badly they had to be removed, and his pink tongue now hangs out the side of his mouth in a constant lopsided grin.

To strangers, he looked “different.”

His face wasn’t symmetrical. His jaw clicked when he moved. He sometimes suffered seizures.

But when Mackenzie Gallant and her family met him, they didn’t see a “damaged” dog.

They saw someone who was simply… happy to still be here.

And that was enough.

They adopted him right before Christmas — giving him the greatest gift a former stray could ever receive:

A family that loved him because of his quirks, not in spite of them.

A Love That Transcends Distance

Today, Murray is nowhere near that lonely puppy abandoned on Dead Dog Beach.

Now he’s the heart of the Gallant household — complete with his own signature look, signature howl, and a very strict bedtime routine.

“He’s my favorite dog,” Mackenzie says.
“He sleeps in my room every night. If you say, ‘Murray, it’s time for bed,’ he runs upstairs and waits to be tucked in.”

And even after Mackenzie left for college, their bond didn’t loosen.

They FaceTime regularly. Mackenzie’s mom still puts Murray’s pillow and blanket in Mackenzie’s room every night, just like always — because that’s where he feels safe.

And if anyone says the word “walk”?

Murray instantly joins his dog siblings, Pili and Fox, in a full-blown choir of joyful howls — sprinting around with a confidence that makes it hard to believe what he survived.

Thriving in the Light

Murray’s face may be crooked, but his spirit is remarkably steady.
