But beneath an uncovered drainage opening, something was wrong.

A weak cry rose from the darkness below—so faint it could have been mistaken for wind, or nothing at all. Deep inside the drain, a dog lay trapped. Injured. Shaking. Running out of time.

His name would later be Ollie.
