A Stray Dog Fighting to Survive
Out on the streets, countless animals suffer quietly. Most passersby never realize the battles these animals are fighting just to stay alive.
Zhuzha, a stray dog believed to be around two years old, had been wandering through the city for months with a frightening condition. Her belly had become unnaturally swollen, so large that simply walking seemed like an exhausting task.
Each step looked heavy. Her breathing was slow and strained, as though her small body was struggling to carry a burden far too great.
Despite her obvious discomfort, Zhuzha had managed to survive on the streets for a long time. Volunteers who spotted her noticed a small ear tag — a sign that she had once been part of a trap-neuter-return program and had already been spayed.
But something about her condition clearly wasn’t right.
A Diagnosis That Explained Everything
Worried about the dog’s worsening condition, rescuers decided to take Zhuzha to a veterinary clinic for a complete medical check.
After blood tests and several examinations, veterinarians finally discovered the reason behind her swollen belly.
Zhuzha was suffering from heartworm disease, a dangerous parasitic infection that affects the heart and blood vessels.
Because of the infection, large amounts of fluid had accumulated inside her abdomen — a condition known as ascites.
The veterinarians explained that if the fluid continued to build up, the pressure on her organs could eventually become life-threatening.
Immediate treatment was the only way to save her.
Using sterile equipment, the medical team carefully performed a procedure to drain the fluid from her abdomen.
What they discovered was shocking.
More than 10 liters of fluid were removed from the body of the small stray dog.

As the liquid slowly drained, Zhuzha’s swollen belly began to shrink before everyone’s eyes. The enormous pressure that had been building inside her body was finally released.
For the first time in months, she could breathe and move more comfortably.
But her recovery was only just beginning.
Zhuzha remained at the clinic under close monitoring. She received medication, supportive care, and treatment to stabilize her heart and help her body recover from the severe infection.
The First Signs of Healing
About ten days after the procedure, the veterinary team began noticing encouraging changes.
Zhuzha seemed stronger.
She started taking short walks on a leash and even showed excitement when food was offered. The exhaustion that once clouded her expression slowly faded, replaced by curiosity and alertness.
The dog who had once struggled to move now seemed eager to explore again.

A Transformation Few Could Believe
After nearly four weeks of treatment and dedicated care, Zhuzha was finally ready to leave the clinic.
The dramatic swelling that had once defined her appearance was completely gone. Her body looked lighter, healthier, and far more comfortable.
Back at the rescuer’s home, Zhuzha began adjusting to a completely new life — one filled with safety, warmth, and kindness.
She met other dogs, relaxed in a peaceful environment, and slowly discovered what life feels like without constant pain.
A New Beginning
Today, Zhuzha’s world looks very different from the one she once endured.
She enjoys walks in the park, runs with newfound energy, and greets people with gentle curiosity instead of exhaustion.
Although she will need lifelong heart medication to manage her condition, Zhuzha has already been given something priceless:
a second chance at life.
While she waits for a forever home, she is surrounded by people who care deeply about her well-being — something every rescued animal deserves.

A Story That Reminds Us Why Rescue Matters
Zhuzha’s journey is a powerful reminder of how compassion can change a life.
Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to stop, notice, and help.
When communities come together to protect vulnerable animals, suffering can turn into healing — and despair can become hope.
And for Zhuzha, that hopeful future has already begun. 🐾
