Along the towering concrete walls of the Sayran reservoir in Almaty, Kazakhstan, one frightened dog found himself trapped in a life-or-death situation.

The reservoir’s steep embankments leave little chance for escape. Once over the edge, there is almost nowhere to stand and nothing to hold onto.

In the turbulent water below, an exhausted dog struggled desperately to stay afloat. His paws scraped helplessly against the smooth concrete wall as the current pushed him farther from safety.

Seeing the animal in distress, a passerby made a dangerous descent down the steep slope. Reaching the dog was difficult enough, but once he had secured the terrified animal, a new problem became clear.

A decade later, the rescue remained deeply embedded in the memory of the city.

To honor the event, ForteBank JSC partnered with the creative agency Progression to create a public tribute celebrating the spirit of unity displayed that day.

The project was entrusted to renowned contemporary artist Yerbosyn Meldibekov, whose work has been exhibited throughout Central Asia and internationally.

His mission was simple yet profound: transform a brief act of courage into a lasting symbol.

The result was a striking sculpture called “Unity,” installed at the very location where the rescue originally occurred.

When the monument was unveiled, it quickly reignited conversations around the world about compassion, cooperation, and the power of collective action.

The sculpture recreates the exact formation of the rescuers, frozen in bronze as they stretch across the embankment in a human chain.

Each figure grips the next, capturing the tension and determination of that dramatic moment.

But perhaps the most powerful feature is found at the top of the installation.

The hand of the final bronze figure extends outward beyond the railing, inviting passersby to reach out and complete the chain themselves.

That simple design choice transforms viewers from spectators into participants.

It reminds everyone who encounters the monument that kindness is not simply something to admire in the past.

It is something we can choose to practice every day.

As images and videos of the installation spread online, hundreds of millions of people engaged with the story once again.

The message resonated across cultures and borders: helping those in need—whether human or animal—is a language understood everywhere.

Reflecting on the project’s enduring meaning, representatives from ForteBank summarized the lesson at the heart of the monument.
