In June 2014, Diane and Tony Rowles—the founders of Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR)—received an urgent call about a dog abandoned in a nearby village. Nothing could have prepared them for what they were about to see.

A young dog, barely ten months old, had been chained beneath a trailer and left lying in the dirt for nearly ten days.

His survival was nothing short of a miracle. A few compassionate locals had quietly tossed him bits of bread and small bowls of water. Without those acts of kindness, he likely would have died there.

The people who abandoned him claimed the puppy had a “contagious disease.” But it quickly became clear that this was nothing more than a convenient excuse—an attempt to justify cruelty through ignorance.

When Tony finally approached the frightened dog, he didn’t find aggression or fear-driven rage.

Duke’s feet and legs had been deliberately crushed.

Every bone and ligament had been broken. The veterinarians believed someone had either repeatedly stomped on the puppy or struck him with a heavy object.

“Someone chose to do this to a defenseless animal,” Tony later said, still struggling to understand such cruelty.

And the abuse didn’t stop there.

The thick chain around Duke’s neck had been pulled so tight for so long that it permanently damaged his throat, leaving him with a chronic cough.

A Long Road Back to Walking

Duke’s recovery would not happen overnight.

Today, Duke lives a comfortable life in the UK. He sleeps on soft beds, runs freely in a garden, and enjoys the love of a family who sees him not as a victim—but as a survivor.
