Some animals lose everything before anyone notices.
Others lose almost everything—yet somehow keep holding on.
Sunsimi was one of those souls.
A Tiny Dog Waiting on a Piece of Cardboard
The rescue request came from Miryang in South Gyeongsang Province.
People had noticed a little dog lying on a sheet of flattened cardboard. He could only move by pulling himself forward with his front legs while his motionless hind legs dragged behind him.
Every movement looked exhausting.
Sunsimi had once lived with an elderly woman who cared deeply for him. But after she became seriously ill, she was admitted to the hospital and never returned home.
Without anyone left to look after him, Sunsimi was abandoned.
A thick metal chain still circled his neck, digging painfully into his skin. Unable to walk, he spent his days dragging himself across the ground, surviving however he could.
One Person Chose Compassion Instead of Giving Up
Volunteer caregiver Yoon Hee-soon first met Sunsimi while helping elderly residents in the community.
Many people believed nothing could be done.
A dog who couldn’t use his back legs, they said, would only continue suffering.
Hee-soon saw something different.
She chose to rescue him instead of accepting defeat. Rather than ending his life, she decided to give him every chance possible—even if the road ahead would be uncertain.

Despite his condition, Sunsimi never acted like a dog who had given up.
He greeted Hee-soon with an excited wag of his tail every time she walked into the room. He ate with enthusiasm, enjoyed every bit of affection, and reminded everyone around him that his desire to live was still incredibly strong.
Medical Tests Brought Even Harder News
A visit to a specialized veterinary hospital in Seoul finally explained why Sunsimi couldn’t walk.
Examinations revealed that his pelvis had been fractured, and his spine had suffered severe damage. Months without proper treatment had caused significant muscle loss in his hind legs, leaving them weak and deformed.
But there was another, even more dangerous problem.
Sunsimi was suffering from an advanced heartworm infection.
The parasites had spread throughout his heart and pulmonary arteries, placing enormous strain on his cardiovascular system. Under those conditions, anesthesia alone could become life-threatening.
Veterinarians faced a heartbreaking dilemma.
Repairing his orthopedic injuries could eventually help him walk again.
But attempting surgery before treating his heartworm could cost him his life.
There was only one responsible decision.
His heart had to come first.

Medication, close monitoring, and careful stabilization became the immediate priority. Only after reducing the danger to his heart could doctors safely consider rebuilding the rest of his body
After two weeks of intensive care, Sunsimi returned to the veterinary hospital.
This visit wasn’t for orthopedic surgery.
Instead, surgeons prepared to remove the heartworms—a delicate procedure that carried significant risk but offered the best chance for recovery.
Throughout the preparation, Hee-soon and her sister stayed beside him.
They spoke gently.
They held his attention.
They quietly hoped for the outcome every rescuer dreams of.
Sunsimi remained calm.
The final moments before surgery captured him being wheeled toward the operating room.
He still couldn’t walk.
But for the first time in a long while, every step around him was leading toward hope instead of survival.

Every Rescue Begins With Someone Who Refuses to Walk Away
Sunsimi’s journey is still unfolding.
There are more treatments ahead, more difficult days, and no promises about how complete his recovery will be.
Yet his story already carries a powerful reminder.
Hope doesn’t come from certainty.
It comes from choosing kindness before knowing the ending.
Sometimes the greatest act of compassion is simply refusing to abandon a life that still wants to fight.
For Sunsimi, that single decision became the beginning of a future he almost never had.
