He Was Starving While a Full Bowl Sat in Front of Him — The Dog Whose Body Rejected Every Meal

Hunger is cruel.

But imagine feeling starving every single day while food sits right in front of you — and your own body won’t allow you to keep it.

That was the heartbreaking reality for Rico.

When rescuers first found him wandering near a shelter on Pozharsky Street, they could barely believe he was still alive. His body was so thin it looked almost unreal, like nothing more than fragile bones covered by skin.

Every rib was visible.

His spine pushed sharply through his back.

Even his hips looked painfully jagged beneath his fragile frame.

Rico moved slowly, weak and exhausted, searching desperately for food like any starving dog would.

But there was one devastating problem.

Eating wasn’t what kept him starving.

His body simply couldn’t hold food inside.

A Condition That Turned Every Meal Into a Battle

The rescue team rushed Rico to a veterinary clinic immediately after finding him.

He was freezing cold, dangerously thin, and barely strong enough to stand.

At first, rescuers assumed he was suffering from severe neglect and starvation alone. But the moment they tried feeding him, they realized something far more serious was happening.

Only minutes after eating, Rico vomited everything back up.

Food.

Water.

Nothing stayed in his system long enough to nourish him.

Veterinarians soon uncovered the reason behind his condition.

Rico’s esophagus was no longer functioning properly.

In healthy dogs, muscles inside the esophagus push food downward into the stomach. But Rico’s muscles had stopped working. Instead of traveling into his stomach, the food remained trapped and eventually came back up.

His body was literally starving — even while he tried to eat.

By that point, Rico had already lost more than 10 kilograms (22 pounds), an extremely dangerous amount for a dog his size.

Without immediate medical care, he likely wouldn’t survive much longer.

Gravity Became Part of His Treatment

Saving Rico required a very unusual feeding process.

Since his esophagus could no longer move food properly, rescuers had to rely on gravity instead.

After every meal, volunteers carefully held Rico upright in a vertical position, almost like holding a baby after feeding.

They kept him sitting upright for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, hoping gravity would slowly guide the food into his stomach before it could come back up.

It was exhausting work.

Some days, even water wouldn’t stay down.

To prevent dehydration, Rico also needed IV fluids while his body struggled to absorb enough nutrients to survive.

At the same time, he fought another battle — staying warm.

With almost no body fat left, Rico shivered constantly. Staff members wrapped him in blankets and monitored him closely, doing everything they could to keep him comfortable.

Doctors Faced a Difficult Choice

Despite the team’s efforts, veterinarians knew Rico’s condition remained extremely serious.

If he continued losing weight, they might need to perform a more advanced procedure called a gastrostomy.

That procedure would place a feeding tube directly into Rico’s stomach, allowing food to bypass the damaged esophagus completely.

It would mean a long recovery and intensive care.

But it could also become his only chance to survive.

A Gentle Dog Still Fighting to Live

Even after everything his body has endured, Rico continues to fight with quiet determination.

At the clinic, he calmly allows staff members to hold him upright after meals.

He stays patient during treatments and IV therapy.

And despite his fragile appearance, there’s still something incredibly strong inside him.

Hope.

For the first time in a very long time, Rico is no longer facing this struggle alone.

He now has people beside him who refuse to give up.

A Second Chance Finally Within Reach

Rico’s journey is still far from over.

He needs ongoing medical treatment, careful feeding routines, and time to regain the weight his body has lost. More tests — and possibly surgery — may still lie ahead.

But one thing has already changed everything.

He survived long enough for someone to notice him.

And now, surrounded by people determined to save his life, Rico finally has something he didn’t have before.

A real chance at a future.
