At first glance, the security footage looked almost unreal—like a scene lifted straight from a film. But for the team at Minneapolis Animal Care & Control, it was a moment that made their hearts race.
When staff arrived that morning, they discovered something impossible. Brenda and Linda—two Pit Bulls housed separately the night before—were now curled up tightly together, sharing a single bed. Each had been locked inside her own tall, concrete kennel. Nothing was broken. No doors were open.
Confused and concerned, the team reviewed the overnight footage.
What they saw left everyone speechless.
Brenda, driven by an overwhelming need to be close to her best friend, had done the unthinkable. She climbed the towering kennel wall—not to escape, not to search for food, but to erase the space between herself and Linda. To her, a few feet of concrete felt like an unbearable distance.
She leapt without hesitation, risking injury, because being alone was simply not an option.

A Friendship Built on Survival
Brenda and Linda were more than kennel mates. They were survivors of the streets.
The two had been found together, wandering the icy roads of Minneapolis, relying on each other to stay alive in a world that offered little kindness. Wherever one went, the other followed. Separation had never been part of their story.
Shelter staff placed them in neighboring kennels, believing that close proximity would be enough. Brenda’s midnight climb proved otherwise.
“For Brenda, being near wasn’t enough,” said Danielle Joerger, a shelter staff member who watched the footage. “Her determination was incredible. She refused to accept being apart from her friend.”

When Emotional Needs Can’t Be Ignored
The viral video did more than shock viewers—it revealed something deeply important about animal behavior.
Once staff realized what had happened, they knew there was no choice to make. Brenda and Linda were moved immediately into a shared suite. The change was instant.
Brenda, once restless and protective, finally relaxed. Linda, timid and withdrawn before, began eating regularly and sleeping peacefully again—safe beside the dog who had always watched over her.
Their well-being depended on each other.

A Forever Promise Kept
As the video spread online, attention poured into the shelter. But staff stood firm on one condition: Brenda and Linda were inseparable. Any adoption would have to include both dogs—or none at all.
Then, the right person came along.
A woman who saw their story knew immediately she couldn’t break the bond they had fought so hard to protect. She adopted them together, giving them the future they had always shared.
“We’re beyond happy they can stay together for life,” Joerger said.
Today, the highest thing Brenda and Linda have to climb is the arm of a couch, where they nap side by side—just as they always wanted.
