In December 2015, on a bitterly cold afternoon in Windsor, Canada, a man named Dean Cresswell was out walking his dogs near a tire shop. Nothing about the day suggested it would become one of those moments that splits life into “before” and “after.”

But then his dogs pulled him off the path—toward a quiet patch of grass.

And there, lying in the stillness, was a small dog—barely 13 pounds—motionless.

His muzzle had been sealed shut with black electrical tape so tightly he couldn’t even whimper. His paws were bound together. Another loop of tape was cinched around his neck.

He wasn’t just abandoned.

He was left to suffocate.

If Dean hadn’t followed his dogs at that exact moment, the little dog later named Justice likely would have been dead within hours.

A Body Destroyed… But Not His Will

When Humane Society rescuers arrived, the scene was hard to process.

Even after they carefully peeled away the tape, the damage was already severe. Justice’s muzzle and paws were grotesquely swollen. His skin was raw. In some places, it was bleeding—where the tape had bitten into his flesh like a trap.

But what they couldn’t see right away was the deeper damage.

Veterinary exams revealed Justice wasn’t only suffering from the bindings—he also had heartworm and serious dental disease. His condition was so fragile that every surgery carried risk.

Over the next several weeks, Justice went through four separate surgeries. Doctors removed dead tissue from his jaw and worked to repair what the tape had destroyed. He spent long days on pain medication, exhausted and barely able to lift himself.

For a while, he couldn’t even stand.

And yet…

Something unexpected began to happen.

Justice started wagging his tail.
He began eating with enthusiasm.
And he looked at the people helping him—not with fear… but with something closer to stubborn determination.

He wasn’t giving up.

The Courtroom Battle That Followed

While Justice fought to survive, another fight was starting—this time in the justice system.

The details of his abuse spread worldwide, sparking outrage and heartbreak. More than 45,000 people signed a petition demanding the harshest possible punishment for the person responsible.

In February 2016, the man who did it pled guilty.

He was sentenced to two years in prison—one of the strongest animal cruelty sentences at the time—and received a 25-year ban on owning animals.

To many, it felt like the world finally said something loud and clear:

Justice mattered.
His suffering mattered.
And cruelty wouldn’t be brushed aside like it so often had been before.

From “Case File” to Family

Healing Justice wasn’t only about repairing his body.

His mind carried scars too.

Like many severely abused dogs, Justice struggled with anxiety and hypervigilance. He needed calm. Routine. Gentleness. A world that didn’t suddenly turn violent.

Through months of rehabilitation, clicker training, and patient care, he slowly began to trust again.

And in July 2016, the moment came that every rescue hopes for:

Justice was adopted.

A family stepped forward who didn’t see him as a “broken dog,” or a headline, or a victim.

They saw him as a companion.

And for the first time, Justice’s life became wonderfully ordinary.

Soft blankets. Favorite toys. Cuddles.
And—because he was still a dog after all—trying to sneak sips of coffee when nobody was watching.

The dog who once couldn’t even make a sound… finally got to live out loud.

In October 2021, at the age of 11, Justice passed peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved him.

His story didn’t end in a field.

It ended in warmth.
